Characteristics: Platygyra are one of the many corals colloquially known as a brain coral. This comes from the many groves in the coral that resemble the wrinkles in a brain. It is also known as a maze coral for the same reason. The multitude of ridges on the coral are also striated and serve as a separation between the mouths of the coral.

Colour: The most common colours are green, maroon and pink. The ridges and the mouths generally have a different colour.

Lighting: These corals prefer low to medium lighting, from about 75 – 125 PAR. Though it is often better to stay on the lower end as they can be stressed by too much light quite easily.

Flow: They appreciate moderate flow to keep the debris out of their groves, with the added benefit of bringing food to them.

Placement: They can be placed anywhere from the bottom to the middle of the tank but make sure to leave a large amount of space between it and it’s neighbours as they have long sweeper tentacles.

Feeding: Platygyra are photosynthetic but will readily accept food. They prefer smaller foods such as pellets or mysis shrimp. Clear feeding tentacles will emerge from their trenches to catch the food and bring it to the small series of mouths in the groves.
