Blastomussa:

Quick Stats:

-          Lighting: Low to Medium

-          Flow:  Low to High

-          Placement: Bottom to Top

-          Feeding: Photosynthetic but accept powdered and meaty foods

-          Aggressiveness: Moderate but has short reach

Characteristics:  The two most common species of Blastomussa seen are Blastomussa merletti and Blastomussa wellsi. Both species resemble a colony of morph or mushroom corals. Each polyp is large, fleshy and round lined with tentacles at the edges.

Colour: The most common colours of Blastomussa would be red, teal and brown. The edges of the coral can often also be a different colour to the mouth creating a nice colour contrast.

Lighting:  These corals appreciate low to medium light from about 50 – 100 PAR.

Flow: Blastomussa appreciate low to medium flow. Any indirect flow should be sufficient to keep these corals healthy, though they should not be kept in stagnant water.

Placement: They can be anywhere from the bottom to the top of the tank. They are quite tolerant when it comes to lighting and flow as long as they get some of both. They can also be placed relatively close to other corals as they don’t have a particularly large stinging reach.

Feeding: They are photosynthetic but do readily accept food. Small powdered foods and large meaty foods (mysis, krill, pellets) will be accepted by the corals. When food is accepted the coral will enclose around the food.
